Conservation

MCRS is dedicated to promoting the conservation and sustainable use of Middle Eastern coral reefs. By engaging with a wide range of stakeholders and applying research findings, the society works to develop strategies and practices that ensure the long-term health and resilience of these vital ecosystems.

MIDEAST CORAL REEF SOCIETY

Research

The society aims to generate a deep understanding of the functioning of coral reef ecosystems in the Middle Eastern region, including the ROPME Sea Area, Sea of Oman, Gulf of Aden, and the Red Sea. Through regional research, MCRS seeks to uncover the unique characteristics and challenges these ecosystems face.

Building Collaborations

MCRS fosters collaboration among researchers and facilitates the exchange of knowledge with stakeholders from governmental, non-governmental, academic, industry, and private sector organizations. This helps integrate diverse perspectives and expertise to enhance the understanding of Middle Eastern coral reef ecosystems.

Update on the Fourth Global Bleaching Event

Scientists across the world are raising concerns about reefs as we experience our 4th global mass coral bleaching event. The Burt Lab are tracking bleaching across the Arabian region as we move into summer 2024, and are alarmingingly already receiving reports of bleaching in Muscat and Abu Dhabi far earlier than bleaching onset normally begins. We will continue monitoring over the coming months - please report any bleaching observations at the link below.
